CeCe Curtis pays tribute to fellow Schitsu’umsh (Coeur d’Alene) tribal member and jazz great Mildred Bailey also known as the Queen of Swing.
Along with her 3-piece band of talented musicians, CeCe Curtis performs some of her favorite Mildred Bailey tunes, ranging from Bailey’s signature song “Rockin’ Chair” to standards like “A Tisket A Tasket”.
Mildred Bailey was a pioneer in the world of jazz in the 1930s and 40s, not only as a woman frontlining the hottest big band orchestras of her day, but also as a Native American who made a successful music career in a predominantly white male industry.
Both CeCe Curtis and Mildred Bailey hail from the Coeur d’Alene Indian Reservation in north Idaho.
- “My goal when performing Mildred Bailey’s songs is to bring awareness to her musical talent, to honor her and her contribution to the world. It’s also important to me that I strive to inspire and encourage fellow Native people, whether youth or elder, to pursue music and to dream big.” – CeCe Curtis
