Cataldo Mission stands as a living landmark on a hill 24 miles East of Coeur d’Alene. Nestled at the West entrance to the Historic Silver Valley, it is Idaho’s Oldest Standing Building and a National Historic Landmark. It was constructed in 1850-53 by members of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe and Catholic Missionaries. Unique architecture and romantic history beckon to all who pass.
The Mission has been many different things for many different people and will always have a place in history. The permanent exhibition of Sacred Encounters: Father DeSmet and the Indians of the Rocky Mountain West tells the story of the “Blackrobes” and Coeur d’Alene Tribe. This Smithsonian-quality display unfolds in nine dramatic scenes, augmented by video and music.
